Fly rods are made for fly fishing and will not work well with other kinds of fishing because of their light weight. The most prized fly rods are split bamboo rods but they are much harder to keep maintained and you have to really take the time to take care of them if you expect them to last.
Unlike other fishing rods, fly rods are sized for the particular fish that you’re going after. If your fly fishing for salmon, you don’t want to use a fly rod made for river trout since it will probably break in half the first time you hook a monster salmon.
Because fly rods use the weight of the fishing line for casting, they have to be light so that you manipulate it and get a good cast in. Because of the way a fly rod is manufactured, they will cost more than a standard fishing rod and depending on what your budget can handle, they can get real expensive which is why you want to look for either a discount rod or a used fly rod first if you’re trying to save money.
If you only go fly fishing a few times a year, then you probably don’t want to spend a ton of money on a quality rod and getting a used one is perfect for you. If however, you fly fish quite a bit, you need a good quality rod and looking at discount rods or used rods are also good if you need to save money.
Depending on where you will be fishing, you want to look at whether you need a shorter or longer rod. Shorter rods are much easier to handle and if there are lot of overhanging branches in the area, with a shorter rod you can get precision cast in without getting hung up in the branches which can ruin your day.
